Progressive web apps are a relative new concept in web and mobile applications. Progressive web apps are built using web technologies but with the strong emphasis of only being used on the mobile phone.
To use a progressive web app, users need to navigate to a URL address and then “add” the website to the home screen. From there, the website is now an icon that looks just like a native app. Upon tap, it takes you to the website and it looks and feels just like an actual native app. The benefit of “adding” the website to the home screen is it removes browser elements like the search bar and back buttons from view. It’s almost indistinguishable.
Initially a Google concept, it can be applied to iOS devices to a lesser effect. Progressive web apps can be a cost effective solution to developing a mobile app, but with the added hurdle of requiring users needing to “add” the website to their home screen.
